Galvanized Steel Strip

Galvanized steel strip is a flat steel product coated with a layer of zinc to protect the steel from corrosion. The galvanization process involves either hot-dip galvanizing, where the steel strip is dipped into molten zinc, or electro-galvanizing, where a layer of zinc is applied through an electroplating process. The zinc coating provides a protective barrier that prevents moisture and other corrosive elements from reaching the underlying steel.

Typical Chemistry:

The chemical composition of galvanized steel strip includes:

  • Base Steel: Typically low carbon steel or mild steel
  • Zinc Coating: Pure zinc (Zn) or a zinc alloy, occasionally including small amounts of other elements like aluminum (Al) to improve adhesion and corrosion resistance.

Physical Properties:

The physical properties of galvanized steel strip depend on the thickness of the zinc coating and the characteristics of the base steel. Typical properties include:

  • Tensile Strength: Varies depending on the grade of base steel; typically around 270-500 MPa
  • Yield Strength: Approximately 140-350 MPa
  • Elongation: 15-30%, depending on the grade and thickness
  • Corrosion Resistance: Excellent due to the zinc coating
  • Thickness of Zinc Coating: Commonly ranges from 20 to 275 g/m²
  • Density: Approximately 7.85 g/cm³ for the base steel

Features:

Key features of galvanized steel strip include:

  • Corrosion Resistance: The zinc coating provides a sacrificial layer that protects the steel from rust and corrosion, extending its lifespan.
  • Formability: Retains the ductility and formability of the base steel, allowing for various fabrication processes such as bending, stamping, and roll forming.
  • Strength: Maintains the strength of the base steel, suitable for structural applications.
  • Surface Finish: Smooth, uniform coating enhances aesthetic appeal and can be painted or powder-coated for additional protection or decorative purposes.
  • Versatility: Suitable for a wide range of applications across various industries.
  • Economical: Provides a cost-effective solution for corrosion protection compared to alternative materials like stainless steel.
  • Weldability: Can be welded using standard techniques, although appropriate precautions must be taken to manage zinc fumes.
