Galvanized Steel Sheet

Galvanized steel sheets are produced by coating steel sheets with a layer of zinc to prevent rust and corrosion. The zinc coating acts as a physical barrier against corrosive elements and offers sacrificial protection, meaning it will corrode in place of the steel. The sheets can be manufactured through hot-dip galvanizing, where the steel is dipped into molten zinc, or electro-galvanizing, which applies zinc through an electrochemical process.

Typical Chemistry:

The typical chemical composition of galvanized steel sheets includes:

  • Base Steel: Typically low carbon steel
  • Zinc Coating: Pure zinc (Zn), which may contain minor amounts of other elements like aluminum (Al) to improve coating adhesion and durability.

Physical Properties:

The physical properties of galvanized steel sheets depend on the thickness of both the steel substrate and the zinc coating. Typical properties include:

  • Tensile Strength: Approximately 270-550 MPa, depending on the base steel grade
  • Yield Strength: Typically around 200-350 MPa
  • Elongation: About 20-30%, depending on the base steel and thickness
  • Corrosion Resistance: Excellent, due to the protective zinc coating
  • Coating Thickness: Usually ranges from 20 to 275 g/m²
  • Sheet Thickness: Typically ranges from 0.3 mm to 3.0 mm
  • Density: Approximately 7.85 g/cm³ for the base steel

Features:

Key features of galvanized steel sheets include:

  • Corrosion Resistance: The zinc coating provides a durable barrier that protects the steel from rust and corrosion.
  • Durability: Galvanized steel sheets are strong and can withstand various environmental conditions, including exposure to moisture and extreme temperatures.
  • Versatility: Suitable for a wide range of applications across different industries.
  • Formability: Can be easily cut, bent, and shaped for various applications without compromising the integrity of the zinc coating.
  • Aesthetic Appeal: Available in various finishes and can be painted or coated for enhanced appearance and additional protection.
  • Cost-Effective: Provides an economical solution for corrosion protection compared to other materials like stainless steel.
  • Low Maintenance: The zinc coating reduces the need for frequent maintenance and repairs, lowering long-term costs.
  • Recyclability: Galvanized steel sheets are recyclable, contributing to sustainable construction and manufacturing practices.
